CHARLOTTE, N.C. – There’s a good chance there was a little North Carolina in your Thanksgiving dinner.
WCNC.com reported that North Carolina produced 1.2 billion pounds of turkey last year, making it number one in the country in pounds produced.
When it comes to turkeys raised, North Carolina is second only to Minnesota.
Butterball’s headquarters is in Garner, N.C., while Jennie-O is based in Willmar, Minn. Those two companies together produce about a third of all the turkeys sold in the country, according to the Washing Post.
North Carolina has been the nation’s top producer of sweet potatoes since 1971, when it surpassed Louisiana, according to the Charlotte Business Journal.
Sampson County is the number one county for turkey and sweet potato production in North Carolina, according to WCNC.
