While the term “eating local” is a buzz term these days, I’ve found in my travels that it has different expressions in various areas of the U.S. So during my trip south, in each city I’ll take readers step-by-step through a journey of eating local. From a visit to the farmers’ market, a farm-to-table restaurant and interviews with farmers and chefs (plus info on CSAs, farm-to-table restaurants and farmers’ markets in the area), the articles will explore all the flavors unique to each city–and what it means to eat locally in the south.
Please join me on this journey by following my Wanderlust blog, commenting below, or by tweeting or sharing this post. Then follow along as we explore four southern states by rail–and discover the southern locavore.

While in many ways pizza is the perfect social food, I’ve learned that it’s a good idea to have a strong plan in place when making it for a large group — a plan for not only the pizzas themselves (which always seem to take longer than I think!), but also a few appetizers to keep hunger at bay while pizzas cook and a few sides round out the meal.
Here is one of my favorite pizza-night menus. It takes pizzeria classics, like marinated olives and tiramisu, and gives them a bit of an update. There’s plenty to nibble before, during, and after the pizza is served — no one goes hungry on pizza night!
Confession: I just recently started making homemade pizza dough. Like, for the first time ever in my life. For some reason I used to be intimidated by it, so I went straight for store-bought dough (which, by the way, there’s nothing wrong with — but homemade is surprisingly simple and fun to make).
Whether you’re ready to make a pizza pronto, or have some extra time on your hands, there’s a pizza dough recipe that’s just right for your schedule.

This weekend is going to be HOT, and all we can think about is how to stay cool.
A nice frozen beverage ought to do the trick!
What’s better than sipping a frozen drink outside in the summer sun?
What about two frozen drinks in one?
We’re truly mixing the drinks this time with a sangria-margarita combination.
Make sure you’ve got lots of ice!

KFC in The Philippines wants to give you diabeetus.
In case fried chicken pizza wasn’t enough of a Franken-food to make you lose your lunch, KFC is now introducing a new product that is just a regular pizza…with fried chicken for CRUST!
Yep…They’ve created the “chizza”.
The Philippines appear to be the testing ground for this new abomination of a “pizza”. But if these two foods happen to be your two favorites, maybe you want to dust off your passport and head over there to try one.
The video is mostly in English but with a little bit of Filipino. The description reads “We don’t hate bread, we just love chicken that much! So we created #KFChizza for you!”
The more I think about it, the more I think pizza with fried chicken for crust is actually delicious. I just wouldn’t exactly call it…

Four pieces served with three sauces. Prosperity dinner $88
M.Y. China, San Francisco CA
I’m not sure how 4 pieces becomes 2 pieces with only 1 sauce, but I think it’s lame – FAIL! If your menu says one thing, maybe you have the responsibility of actually delivering what it says.
